The History of the Vibrator

The electric vibrator was first created out of a doctors need to try to cure a woman of a common ailment which was referred to as “hysteria.” During the 1880s, doctors were finally able to help female patients with a medical machine to help relieve the affects of “hysteria.” Up to this point in time doctors had to manually help women masturbate to relieve this condition. With invent of the electric vibrator doctors now could treat patients more effectively and faster. Doctors in the past claimed to spend hours of so called non-sexual act to bring women to orgasms in order to cure the “hysteria.”

Many manufacturers started to design vibrators for home use; thus eliminating the trip to doctor’s office but by the 1920s vibrators has all but disappeared at the home front. This disappearance can probably be traced back to the vibrators use in pornographic movies and photographs; thus making them less palatable for the average woman.

Many people and some manufacturers simply refer to vibrators as body massagers. Under this marketing name millions of sex toys and vibrators have been purchased by men and women, no matter what their sexual orientation is to be. Although there are specific models that are good only for body massaging there is a whole slew of sex toys and vibrators that can be purchased for sexual pleasure, through masturbation. Vibrators and masturbation have become synonymous with each other. Vibrators can help bring you that blissful orgasm that is so hard to reach and capture. Enhancing your love making with a vibrator is a great way to spice up your dull relationship.

Some women have complained and expressed concern over, what is commonly called “vibrator addiction.” Women complain about “vibrator addiction” because they believe they can not reach orgasmic heights unless they are pleasuring themselves with a vibrator. This syndrome simply is psychological and there has never been any evidence that repeated vibrator use will have negative affects on your sexual system.

Vibrator advertisement, c. 1910. "The secret of the ages has been discovered in Vibration. Great scientists tell us that we owe not only our health but even our life strength to this wonderful force. Vibration promotes life and vigour, strength and beauty. ... Vibrate Your Body and Make It Well. YOU Have No Right to Be Sick."

Many states within southern portion of the U.S. do not allow sex shops or the sale of vibrators as well as sexual novelty toys. Some states, such as Texas, does not allow the sale of dildos for sexual stimulation but you can sign a waiver that outlines your purchase is simply for educational reasons.
